The Cruise Control on my 04 Gold Wing won't stay set.?

It pops off, after being set, as I drive. The problem seems to be coming from the front brake lever. If I push forward on that lever, the crusie stays set. About as soon as I release the forward pressure on brak lever, the cruise control unsets.
The Cruise Control on my 04 Gold Wing won't stay set.?
Sound like the slack in the brake lever is interfering with the cruise controls break release control. Adjust the cable tension at the lever just enough to keep a little tension on it and that should solve your problem.

see my eyebrow rise, Motogp?

an 04 Wing with a brake cable?

no idea if the play in the lever can be adjusted, not interested in getting close enough to a Wing to find out

but is has hydraulicly operated brakes on both ends for sure
Reply:The switch also activates the rear brake light.

Does the brake light stay on?

May need a new switch.

How many miles can you get out of a 650 single before the engine needs and overhaul?

...assuming it's properly maintained.

I'm talking about a DR or a KLR 650. I've heard 20 up to 100K. Anyone out there ever burned one out? If so how many miles did you get out of it. What was your next move? New engine? Rebuild? Or new bike?

I just bought a new DR 650 and am using it as my main commuter. The miles are racking up fast. I'm trying to get a feel for how long it will live.
How many miles can you get out of a 650 single before the engine needs and overhaul?
you know this is an impossible question to answer, do you?

it depends ...

on your riding style

your maintenance style

maybe even the oil you use

the specific bike - some seem more in tune than others

where you ride - stop'n'go at 100 degrees vs. overland at more moderate temperatures

it will "live" until it "dies" - so simple
How many miles can you get out of a 650 single before the engine needs and overhaul?
It depends on how and where it's ridden, and sometimes when. It also depends on what oils are used, and how often they're changed. A good warm up, frequent oil changes and modest riding, you could expect around 100K or more, but cam chains don't last long on singles, and 50K for a top end is often enough to need a chain and tensioners. Harsher than theat, and you'll get much less. NB the oil feed to the top end is critical, and non-return valves are often unreliable, so from startup, make sure the oil has arrived there from the oil pump before moving off.

How do you sell a yamaha rhino with no title???

its paid for and we want to sell it... how do you get a title?? or in nevada do you need a title to sell something??
How do you sell a yamaha rhino with no title???
A bill of sale should be enough. Make sure to include the make/model/year/VIN#. You may want to ask your closest dealership about a lost title or how to obtain one from the original dealer.
How do you sell a yamaha rhino with no title???
heres the deal, you can sell anything without a title however

any one wanting to buy it will want it, cheap . real cheap

go get a title asap. make the money you need, check out

blue book.com for the right price to sell ...
Reply:Heh, you can't really do anything until you call the bank and ask for a release of lien and your title back.

Calling DMV will do nothing. Same with Filing for a salvage.
Reply:In AZ, here's how its done:

Go to the MVD, request a duplicate title for an already-registered vehicle. Prove you are you, and it is yours [by the registration]. A new replacement title is $20.

I am sure NV is similar.

Buying a motorcycle but parents will not let me????

hey. im 17 right now, and i will be 18 in about 3 months. i told them i want a kawasaki ninja 250 or 500. but they say as long as i am living under their roof i cant buy one. i told them the day i turn 18 is the day im going to get a bike, so its either now or then, right now i have about 1200$ whats a good bike i can get for around 2300$? i only work in the summer because i have school otherwise. I am taking a msf course here soon also. how is the insurance on one of these? and also, how owuld i go about convincing my parents into letting me get a motorcycle? they said if i get one, they will sell my truck ( wich i have put alot of $ into it moddifing it.) , wich i do not think is right at all, i should get my money back that i put into it if they do do that. any way, any info would be appreciated.
Buying a motorcycle but parents will not let me????
used honda rebel, good on gas, easy to use, not the kind youd like though, but still a bike, you should also take your parents with you to first few MSF courses, so they can talk with a professional, and discuss the safety aspects.
Buying a motorcycle but parents will not let me????
Try to play up the "gas is too expensive" factor.

Ive been in a motorcycle accident and I never will get on another one ever.

So I see their point of view. They love you. Not everyone has that.
Reply:you dont listen do you????

the important question is.... where are you going to live when you buy the bike....

your parents said not under this roof....

so appartments are worth around the $1000 a month...

dosnt leave much for the bike.....
Reply:As long as you live under your parents' roof you need to honor their rules. So when you figure out how much you need for the bike, insurance, MSF, gear, tax and title, don't forget rent, food and utilities.

Do you know of...?

I was wondering if anyone knew of any used motorcycle dealerships? Im looking in the Massachusetts area.

Thanks for the help.
Do you know of...?
No. But if you look in the yellow pages of the phone book I am sure you will find some if there are any.
Do you know of...?
Most of the new bike dealerships sell used bikes.

You can also look for independent motorcycle repair shops. They will sometimes have used bikes for sale.

I don't remember every running across a used bike only dealership, though it wouldn't surprise me if there is one somewhere.

Will a 1995 HONDA XR200 engine and transmission fit a 2005 honda xr400?

my 400 engine blew i was wondering if it would fit and if it did would i lose a lot of power or just a little?

I have a 2007 cbr 600rr I want to know which brand of sportbike boot, will add the most height (how many "'s?)

Just buy the ones that are comfortable then go see a cobbler and have higher soles added on. Height challanged women do this all the time. Just be sure that the new sole isn't so thick that it interferes with operation of the shifter and brake.

What kind of gas mileage would motocross little type bike get?

in particular the DR-Z400S suzuki bike. Also has fast can it go, and can you drive it on the highway? its got 398cc's
What kind of gas mileage would motocross little type bike get?
motocross bikes dont have odometers, or speedometers. and are not streetlegal. dual-purpose or trail bikes have them and are streetlegal. most of them are great for around town put on highway at speed sof 70+ mph they are close to tapped out. you will be running them hard at speeds like that or over. must have no problem with 55 to 65 mph sustained speeds.

quote from another website--

" I've found my DRZ MPg to be inversely related to the speed I travel. With stock gearing, 55mph netted 50MPG, 70 got ~44MPG, 80+mph tanked at 35MPG."

Which motorcycle boot adds the most height?

Will a sportbike accelerate more quickly than a cruiser with the same engine size?

Will a Ninja 250 beat a Honda Rebel?

Would a Ninja 650 beat a Honda Shadow?

I don't whether I should look into a sportbike or a cruiser for my first motorcycle. Any information would be appreciated.
Will a sportbike accelerate more quickly than a cruiser with the same engine size?
there are 250's that can beat 500's out there, so your Q is not really sensible. BTW I hope you slow down and live to learn to ride well. Anyone can ride fast enough to be dangerous to themselves, and/or others. We riders need you young blokes to live to take over the fight when we're gone.
Will a sportbike accelerate more quickly than a cruiser with the same engine size?
Ninja for a first bike=hospital time

better learn on the Honda

ya the sport is made to go fast,,bigger carb more air flow etc.
Reply:Cruisers create less stress on the body for extended time in the saddle.

If both have the same horsepower and the same gearing then both are equal from a stop. At speed the sportbike has the aerodynamic advantage and will probably reach a higher top speed quicker.
Reply:Yes, a sport bike with the same size engine will beat a cruiser every time. The two are made to be ridden in different ways. The name says it all SPORT bike, fast, nimble, requires more rider skill to use to potential, easier to get in over your head and out ride your ability. CRUISER bike, slower, more forgiving, less costly insurance, more comfortable.
Reply:Most of the time a sportbike will out accelerate a cruiser with over twice the engine size, but there are a few power cruisers that defy this general rule. A 600cc stock will out perform 1200cc air cooled bike all day. An old v-max bike will surprise many 600cc riders so there are exceptions, I cannot name them all but Yamaha makes a few, as do the other Jap manufactures. Harley's v-rod will put up a good race and even beat 600cc rocket with a good driver, I have not seen this happen at a track yet but the numbers say they could with a better driver. Heck the new ninja 250 has better quarter mile times than the big sportster, check motorcyclist.com for the real numbers by pro drivers. Once the bikes are modified all bets are off on that one though.
Reply:DEFINITELY!

sport bikes tend to have double to triple the power of their cruiser counterparts
Reply:Absolutely.

The displacement is only part of the equation.

With the exception of the ninja 250 (which I am pretty sure only has 2 cylinders) most sportbikes have 4 cylinder in-line engines, as opposed to cruisers which almost all have v-twins.

They usually have oversized carbs, overhead cams, and run much higher RPM's, which - combined with the right gearing, and sprocket set - give you ridiculous amounts of power. On top of this, they are usually much lighter as well.

Definitely avoid sportbikes for your first motorcycle. For one, they are much too powerful (although the 250 ninja probably isn't too bad) - the riding position is uncomfortable, and isn't good for learning how to ride. Also - when (not if) you drop it, a sport bike has way too much plastic on it, and it will get messed up bad.

I usually suggest learning to ride on a used dirt bike, or enduro style bike (on/offroad). They can take a lot more abuse than a sportbike or a cruiser. Once you are more comfortable, then get something that looks nice, and has more performance.

It is also suggestable to take a riding course - some states require doing this in order to get your motorcycle license.

I'm not necessarily anti-sportbike, but a lot of inexperienced riders get on equipment that is basically designed for racing, and go out and kill themselves on it. I just attended a funeral for one of my friends from high school who did just that.

I mostly stick to cruisers - my '06 Suzuki Boulevard C50 has plenty of torque, and is pretty nimble for a cruiser. 800cc, fuel injected (no carbs), liquid cooled, and shaft drive (no chains/belts to wear out). It has an adjustable uni-shock in the back (no ugly springs), floorboards (for the rider) and a heel-toe shifter. The only thing I added was a seat back.

The 450cc version would probably make a decent starter bike (although you should definitely consider learning on a dirt bike).

The most important thing to remember is - people in cars are not looking for you. Most of the courses tell you to pretend like you are invisible.

I take it a step further and pretend like people are actively trying to kill me - that way when someone swerves across three lanes of traffic, and stands up on their brakes in front of you - you aren't surprised (had this happen about a week after I got that suzuki - I dropped two gears, locked up both brakes, and slid to a stop right at the guys bumper - he is lucky to still be alive, I was shaking so bad, if I had gotten off that bike - I would've twisted his head clean off)

With that said - as long as you are careful, keep your bike well maintained, and watch out - motorcycling can be the most fun you will ever have.

Good luck!
Reply:Yes the sport bike should be faster. The motor may be the same size but the cams carbs gearing are different. Except for the rebel anything can out run a rebel. Some one who knew motocycles would not have had to ask.

Has anyone used Bio-Fuel?

Can a Suzuki Hayabusa run off of Bio-fuel (B85), and if so do it burn cleaner in your engine and what kind of performance drawbacks or benefits do it have. The owner's manual suggest 89 mid-grade fuel, and also states that gasohol may be used (grain, alcohol) if the ethanol content is not greater than 10%. Has anyone put this concept to real world practice and what was the results?
Has anyone used Bio-Fuel?
Don't try running the E85, your fuel injection system isn't calibrated for it. There's fewer Btu's in an equal amount of ethanol than in gasoline and the result will be a very lean mixture. E85 also delivers less gas mileage because of it's lower energy content.
Has anyone used Bio-Fuel?
E85 is 85% ethanol so you can not use it in a bike with worrying about the ethanol causing many problems in a short time. They say you could use 10% max but why do it, you will get less miles per gallon with it.
Reply:Less output due to the less BTU's that B85 puts out.

Now if you have more alcohol in your system get ready to replace seals in your fuel system.
Reply:Ethanol content of 10% is pretty much standard practice now.

They use the ethanol instead of MBTE to oxygenate the fuel so it burns cleaner. Essentially, the ethanol is an additive, not the fuel.

Hondal XL 500 1978?

I have an old XL 500. I want to take the clutch/or flywheel off, what ever it is called. I took the side pannel off. The are four spring loaded blots that seem to be holding it on. Can I just take these off??? Is there much trouble putting these back on.

Thanks
Hondal XL 500 1978?
Just take them out. The bolts are longer than the springs.
Hondal XL 500 1978?
Looks like a conventional clutch to me. Go to www.bikebandit.com. Then OEM PARTS - Honda - 1979 ( there's no fiches listed for 1978) Then select XL500S Link. Look at the diagram for the clutch advancer and you'll see an exploded parts diagram for your bike. You can take the four screws out easily - they should have springs around them. These are the clutch return springs. If they are old and worn ( you can measure the height if you have the specs) then your clutch may not return fully and can slip. I would suggest replacing them as they are fairly cheap. If you can see the diagram though it would appear the whole assembly is retained with a nut ( item 20). In order remove the clutch assembly you'll probably have to remove this nut. BE CAREFUL here - the clutch basket is light aluminum and if you try and grip it or jam it it will break. A better suggestion is to jam the steel drive gears at the base of the clutch basket. Sometimes just a rag is enough - other times a large screwdriver between the gears should do it. Once you've undone the lock nut the basket should come apart. Don't mix up the clutch plates - they have to go back the same way as they came out. Also measure the plates if you can and replace any worn ones - as they usually wear all together do them all. Don't forget to measure the metal plates 6 and 13 too as they can also wear and reduce clutch efficiency. Also check in the service manual whether or not the lock nut (20) is a discard item - sometimes they are one use only - nothing like having your whole clutch come apart in the middle of nowhere for a 5 buck nut! Good Luck - get a service manual too - they really do help and can save you far more than the cost of the book. Ebay's a real good source for good ones.

How would it be possible to be a pillion passenger on someones Yamaha DT125 bike or similar machine please?

I realise this may seem a weird question, but i just love these bikes,%26amp; have always wondered what it would be like to be a passeenger on one,or even have ago at riding one of these types of motorcycles.

I don't know anyone who has one.Any suggestions folks please?

I live in the United Kingdom.

I dont really like the ordinary road bikes.

Not much difference really, it's just higher off the ground. Being a passenger for the first time is quite scary, but it gets fun really quickly. Riding on Your own is even more fun.

Ducati, Aprilia, Triumph, KTM or MV Agusta?

I want to have a Supersport bike that is non-conventional, that is neither of the four Japanese titans where they could easily get old and depreciate. And I know that Europeans have more of the heritage than them.

Which is the European brands is best to own in terms of reliability and racing?
Ducati, Aprilia, Triumph, KTM or MV Agusta?
Motorcycle USA website usually throws in a few euro bikes for their supersports tests: worth a look.

My favourite is the Aprilia RSV but the MV 312 is awesome. The MV is inline 4 like the jap bikes so an easier comparison. Other euro sports bikes to consider are:

Triumph Daytona (675 and 1050)

BMW K1200R

Ducati make good all round bikes but they are a little overpriced considering the sales volume and componentry.
Ducati, Aprilia, Triumph, KTM or MV Agusta?
Ducati - very nice- very expensive -need lots of TLC - a fine machine though the dry clutch can make it sound like a bag of wrenches.

Aprilla - Nice bike but I thought they're out of business - could be wrong but I'd check ( parts service warranty may be an issue)

KTM - nice but unproven yet also spendy

MV Augusta - F4 is beautiful but pricey.

Triumph - my favorite is the 675 a dynamite piece of kit that's capable of track days but won't break the bank.

They're all getting pretty reliable now it's just a question of cost and servicing. Also buy the proper gear - leathers and get some frame sliders and race day "Cheap" plastic farings if you're going to try it on the track - you will almost certainly dump one at some time and then the fun really starts! Good luck I don't think you'd be disappointed with any of those brands so I just think of the cost!!
Reply:given the option i'd take the duc, their 1098 has really hit the spot...
Reply:European motorcycles are just as reliable as the Japanese bikes but require more servicing/shorter service interval at a higher cost. I would go with Ducati because of the parts availability, the aftermarket help/options, and there are more service centers/dealers.
Reply:From a racing point of view the recent (10+ years) results indicate that Ducati is the top dog from the five in track and road racing, notably WSB, KTM are top of the off-road results their MotoGP involvement was a bit of a failure but the RC8 is well-reviewed. Aprilia mainly race in the smaller GP classes and very successfully. Triumph have largely not been involved in racing although they are in the Supersports section of Superbikes. MV Agusta are not the same marque that was so successful in the 50s and 60s and are not that involved in racing outside 2008 Superbike teams.

All make capable and droolworthy bikes, if I had the money and/or inclination I would go with the RC8, but each marque might find a place in my dream garage.

Where can i compare rates for motorcycle insurance?

Type that into your Google bar. Most insurance sites will do a comparison for you. Progressive is one.

How do I check the oil on my motorcycle??

I own a 1997 Suzuki LS650 Savage. Single cylinder. I am trying to read the manual on the bike about this, but it does not tell me much. It says that there is a window, but they are showing the cap as a window. I am confused. I though there would be a window on the motor. I don't see one. In the cap, it looks like a L that I am taking for low? But it could be a seven? Anyone know this year and make bike help me out please??
How do I check the oil on my motorcycle??
Most have a sight glass on the side of the engine - if yours has a dipstick built into the cap, and it says 'L' then I think I would agree with your assessment.

Make sure to get the right kind of oil for your bike, and if it has been a while (or never) then consider draining it, replacing the filter, and putting some synthetic or synthetic blend.
How do I check the oil on my motorcycle??
not sure on the 97.. but on mine the window was on the side of the motor near the brake pedal..

Purchasing a motorcycle from a dealer...?

I have ridden motorcyles for many years and I am licensed to drive one but I've always purchased used from private parties. For the first time I am buying from a dealer and they seem like it's a problem for me to test drive the bike. I've already filled out a credit application and have been approved.

My question: Is this a normal practice for Motorcyle Dealers to not let people test drive a bike before they purchase? The dealer has been around for over 20 years.
Purchasing a motorcycle from a dealer...?
They are usually pretty hesitant to do so - since they can't go with you, and bikes are REALLY easy to drop.

Maybe find out if they have a used bike on the lot that is similar to the one you are thinking about purchasing (maybe a prior year model with a few miles on it) that they will let you test ride.

It wouldn't be exactly like it, but you could get an idea.

I lucked out - one of my friends bought an '06 Suzuki Boulevard C50, and let me ride it (he knew I had way more experience than he did - and that I would be very careful with it). I was so impressed I went and bought myself one.

Very nice bike - looks sharp, isn't a rocketship or anything, but it isn't a dog either.

Fuel injected, liquid cooled, and shaft drive. All for around $7K - brand new.

You can't beat that with a stick.
Purchasing a motorcycle from a dealer...?
Yes, they don't like to do test drives, but some will with a copy of your license and/or name of your insurance company. You may need to let them know how serious you are about buying. Most dealers just expect you to know what you want.
Reply:Yes, it is normal practice. Too much Liability and risk to their interest. If You know which bike You are interested in, often at big Bike events such as bike week some of the companies offer test rides at a track or other closed enviornment.
Reply:Yes, it's normal practice, but totally unnecessary.

We have a Triumph/Ducati dealer here who allows test rides on all used bikes and usually has demos of the new bikes to ride. He has a 30 mile loop and lets you go on your own.

The rest of the dealers in town generally allow accompanied test rides on used bikes (the sales person follows on another bike) when they aren't busy, but do not have new bike demos.
Reply:I've had no problem test riding Triumphs and Victory's. We have a Ducati dealer in town who also offers test rides. The Japanese bike dealers though have been very remiss to allow test rides.
Reply:ok im going to break it down for everyone because i am a dealer. dealers hate giving test rides for these reasons first the insurence part of it. second even if the person is licensed who know if they are really going to be able to handle is new bike on there first time out. next must bike companies dont get demo bike from the factories so then after the test ride if the person doesn't buy they have a used bike. and lastly i have let people take test rides and you know what only half of those people went ahead with the purchase. and the other half tire kickers and just cost me a lot of money. and finally myself personly have owned tons of bikes before test riding and loved them all. ill leave you with two things. one, i a customer says to me that "i'm not buying anything untill he can ride it" right away i know he is wasting my time and he is full of it and that he is not buying anything. with that said if you really want a test ride i would say that i might be a good idea throw some money around. give them a $500 deposit on the bike show your not blowing smoke

Whats the max speed for 49cc mopeds?

I am wanting to get a 49cc moped because im allowed to drive one in state of kansas legally with a instructors permit. I am wondering what the max speed for mopeds are becuase on ebay some say 30mph and some say 45 mph. Is there a maximum speed to be considered as a 49cc moped in kansas?
Whats the max speed for 49cc mopeds?
KANSAS syas that you can ride with a DRIVERS license only, or a limited MOPED only license.

A Moped in Kansas is no more than 30mph and no more than 50cc`s.

if its a 50 but goes 45mph, then you need a Motorcycle endorsement!

Same with scooters too. Mopeds have skinny large wheels and pedals.

they allow "motorized" bicycles up to 135cc`s, But thats only to allow Whizzers and Whizzer replicas, which have a flathead type 4 stroke motor which have larger displacements but put out little horsepower, like a Briggs and Stratton.

Anyone with a Valkyrie trike or other trike without reverse?

I currently have a Vulcan 800 Drifter that I love. I've been thinking about getting a trike too for more storage space on trips. How do you handle parking a trike without reverse on it? It seems like it would really limit your parking places and manueverability when parking. I'm only 5'4 and worried I wouldn't be able to push it out of/in to situations. Of course I'm dreaming about a Valkyrie trike. Thanks.
Anyone with a Valkyrie trike or other trike without reverse?
I thought the Valkyrie did have a reverse. Isnt it based on a Goldwing? I was nearly sure all Goldwings had a reverse gear.

Anyway, to answer your question..

We had the displeasure of working on probably the worst trike in history. It was a Yamaha 1100 converted to a trike. From memory it was a Virago or something equally unapealling.

It had 10" rear tyres, a locked diff and no reverse gear.

It took 3 of us to push backwards into the workshop and where we wanted it to go.

Im not sure how you would cope. I read somewhere most of the newer trikes have reverse adapted to them with an electric gear driven motor and a button.
Anyone with a Valkyrie trike or other trike without reverse?
I ride with some that have a trike with no reverse. They just don't park in a place where it's uphill on the backout. They pull around and let gravity roll it back into the spot if possible.
Reply:You must pay attention to how and where you park, as with any large motorcycle.

Go this site. There is a lady who is a member of VRCC who has ridden a Valkyrie trike all over the country.

Can anyone find a CDI Box for a motorcycle for me?

I was wondering if anyone could find me a CDI Box for my 1987 Honda CR80R. I cant seem to find one online and was wondering if someone could help me find one. Any websites or links would be great! Does anyone think any junkyards would have them in northern illinois?

Electric parts from junkyards have the same warranty as new, no returns once installed. You should be able to get a new one through any Honda dealer. Used will cost 50%-75% of new, with no idea of condition. If you can't find a new one, or insist on used, my local guy should have (or be able to get) one. He ships UPS. http://mcsalvage.com/

To be honest I'm not sure.

How about them LAKERS! :-)
Do you need licence or learner permit to be able to drive a super pocket mini bike in boston,ma?
These small bikes are not legal for use on public roads %26amp; streets anywhere in the US. So, you don't need a license to be legal, since it's already illegal.

I just piped my 87 Yamaha banshee and its smoking from the right pipe and the plugs are not bad what is this?

possible rings, or valve seals. you changed the compression when you piped it, less resistance on the exhaust valves.

Banshee's are 2 stroke.

Forget the valves.

Possibly the carb on the right cylinder is out of tune and running too rich.

Take it to a dealer and give the carbs a tune and sync.

you need to jet your carbs. this is normal when piping 2 strokes.

How much does a typical motorcycle battery cost?

i'm looking at a 1979 used suzuki for $500 with 50k miles, the owner tells me it runs well but needs a new battery so if anyone knows aprox how much it may cost, thanks.
How much does a typical motorcycle battery cost?
30-45.00
How much does a typical motorcycle battery cost?
Anywhere from 30 to over 100 dollars. Depends on what battery your bike needs and where you buy it. Sorry, I don't know what battery that bike takes.
Reply:If you are going to get one get a good one, even if its like $75. I see these people buying lawnmower batterys, and wonder why they have all these problems.
Reply:A common battery for this age and displacement is a Yuasa 12V-12 AH battery. If you don't want a geewhiz battery (gel filled glass mat, sealed so you never add water) you can get it for under $65.

And the key to operating with just a plain ordinary battery is to hook the battery up to a battery charger over night, so it can avoid sulfation on other ills. This needs to be a sophisticated device and deliver a carefully calculated current, notify you when it is wired wrong and protect the battery by shuting off before it tells you, in fact a battery charger like an ACU-MAX 900 from Acumen. It will do a seriously good job of charging while not burning out electrical system on an old bike with crunchy wiring. Each evening I come home and I hook my battery charger up to my HONDAMATIC and I feel better about coming out in the afternoon, just starting it up, get on the highway without even using my choke, GO UP A HUGE HILL at MAXIMUM THROTTLE, and complete my half hour drive at top speed. When it gets me home one more time, I think, I REALLY think, it needs a bit of pampering, and only a battery charger will provide it, safely and conveniently.

No really these things will analyze the battery so you don't waste time on a bad battery and they recover, automatically, from a situaution that would kill the battery dead in its tracks. (My Hondamatic cannot be push started, you know, so I baby the electrics a bit, like NOT CONNECTING a completely stone dead battery and using your alternator to charge it. Honda says its a no-no, and we always do what honda says, right?
Reply:Dont buy a ricer over 10 years old.

They are a pain
Reply:About 50$. Too much for what you get.

I have another choke question please?

i ride half an hour on the motorway in the morning to get to work then i park it for around 6 or 7 hours. After work it usually starts real easy so i don't use the choke. I feel a bit mean though cos i get straight onto the motorway on this massive hill which my bike does not like at all and then i go as fast as i can all the way home for half an hour. Should i use the choke in the afternoon before i head home? Should i let her warm up for how long?
I have another choke question please?
I don't think the choke is needed unless it has a hard time starting. Just give it a little chance to warm up. My bike is very cold blooded and prefers to warm up a little even when I think it's warm enough out it shouldn't.
I have another choke question please?
If this is a modern bike and it is fuel-injected, your bikes engine speed is basically filtered through a processor chip, measuring the throttle opening. But of course it's not because you don't find chokes on these bikes in the first place. If you don't notice anything behaving strangely there is not much of anything you can do except waste gas, idling in the afternoon. If it feels good do it.

And how much heat will be generated by a stationary bike on fast idle, compared to getting you up that hill as fast as you can go? Not a problem. Treat your bike to an early oil change to square things!
Reply:The rule of thumb is to use the choke a little as possible. If the cylinder head is cold the fuel does not stay atomized and causes hard starting and that is when you need a choke. If the bike starts no problem without a choke then give it 30 seconds of warm up, enough time to put your helmet, jacket, and gloves on.
Reply:Usually choking needs in the morning time when you first start it. Rarely a few seconds may be needed, if the atmosphere is that cool. Please let your bike a checkup with mechanics.
Reply:if it is warm outside, you dont need the choke. just best to start it let it warm up the cylinder a little. it is hard on any engine to start right up and go instantly. give it atleast 30 seconds to a minute or 2. no more needed this lets the oil get flowing in the engine. the coolant to start to cycle in a bike that has it.

Yamaha 82 xv750 Virago How do I remove the allen head cap screw from the very bottom of fork it just turns.?

If you have already taken the springs out of the top, put them back in and try again. You need some pressure on the damper rod (what the screw is screwed into) to turn that screw out.

Sometimes, they get stuck and you need more pressure on the damper rod. Take the fork caps off the top, one at a time and remove the spring (careful, the springs may try to fly out of the tubes, they press up against the cap.). Stick a broom handle down the tube until it bottoms. Have a helper press down while you try to remove the screw.

Last resort, use an impact driver to remove the screw. Unfortunately, this can result in breakage if you aren't careful, but at least you will be able to get the damper rod out.

Will removing the internal parts inside the muffler of my new yamaha v star 1300 affect it's proformance

Like the baffle, catalitic converter, fiberglass shield things like that. Im looking to get a louder sound out of the pipes.
Will removing the internal parts inside the muffler of my new yamaha v star 1300 affect it's proformance
The sound change will have more of an effect than performance. The sound will be a little louder but somewhat raspier.
Will removing the internal parts inside the muffler of my new yamaha v star 1300 affect it's proformance
Your performance will probably suffer a bit.Bikes need a little back pressure to run their best.
Reply:YES! removing these parts will allow it to produce the MAXIMUM EAR DESTROYING SOUND, and some cop will come along and listen to you start it (because all the neighbors call and complain) and run his night stick up your tailpipe and write you a ticket for making an illegal modification to your motorcycle. It will not gain anything and it DOES have a catalytic converter, so it will void the emissions warranty as soon as you try it. And you will get a ticket for that as well, and no mechanic will touch your noise maker until you put them BACK in place.

What's my bike worth?

I'm not selling it. I'm just curious what it's worth. 2002 Honda RC51 27,000 miles never raced or used for stunts, but ridden progressively hard. not abused. never wrecked.

now the meaningless extras......corbin seat, high level windscreen, carbon radiator fins, very recent 530 chain and steel sprockets - stock gearing, power commander 3 (not usb model), front and rear + clutch steel lines, high mount harris titanium exhaust, well maintained. all stock parts that were removed are included.
What's my bike worth?
enough
What's my bike worth?
2 of my buddies have the same bike Both paid around $4500 and one was stock, the other had pipes, You can get around $5k for the bike and all the aftermarket stuff (2002 and newer has updated swingarms) . Problem is, the bike is kind of rare and not many people know what is it. Its not common like a GSXR or CBR RR or NINJA. You just have to find the right person that loves to ride a V-Twin!! I hope your not going back to an Inline 4 bc you will miss the V-TWIN .

2001 Honda XR100R Stalls?

Hello:

My Honda stalls when I give it gas really fast, but only when at speeds near idle. If I am going just fast enough where I don't have to hold the clutch, and I give it all its got, it acts just as if I had held the kill switch.

I have also noticed some oil in the air filter, but it does not appear to have come through the carburetor.
2001 Honda XR100R Stalls?
the reason it stalls when you throttle up quickly is because the carburetor on that model is a mechanical slide type and if you throttle up too fast just off idle the engine gets air faster than fuel causing it to run too lean on the mixture to run. As far as the oil in the filter box it is probably coming from the crankcase breather tube due to regular pressure fluctuations in the crankcase. when was the last time you checked the filter before finding the oil? It will show up some over time.

If that doesn't work, the baseball cards are your only hope
Reply:baseball cards in spokes!!! lol
Reply:Jam a plastic pop bottle between the fork and the wheel. They will hear you coming a block away.
Reply:Hookup a set of speakers on the rear fender facing OUT! Then plug in your Ipod as a sound source, record some one with a GREAT SOUNDING bike, and if you can get a sensor for the speed to make it louder automatically, (Fat)bobs your Uncle.

It would require real work to make it work right, but some electric car maker has plans to hook up a sound track from a Ferrari. You could go into the business of equipping bikes with the sound track of their dreams!

Your nearest Big Dog dealer can order you a pillion seat, which is what its called, that has suction cups that stick to the rear fender. they are very secure and dont damage paint if your careful.

Hotwiring a dirtbike?

how do i hotwre a street legal dirtbike, i lost my key and i need to permanently hotwire it, please help!!!
Hotwiring a dirtbike?
Go to your dealer with the frame/engine/VIN number and order a new key.

There are ways to hotwire the bike, but every time you get pulled over by the police you wil be hassled and also it will drain your battery as the power will also be running
Hotwiring a dirtbike?
there should be two wires running to the key all you should have to do is disconnect those and it should start with a kick if it is kick start if it is electric i dont really know
Reply:yeah, such a likely story.

You get a wire about 16 " long, and CRIMP a couple of spring clamps (battery charger or the like, now pull of the side cover, and hook from the FUSE BOX input to the output side of another fuse. Over time, when you have kickstarted it a few dozen times, it actually starts.

Leave your wire connected and replace the side cover, you probaly won't get the headlight this way, so we have ways of KNOWing if your story is true. You could make two of them and attempt to wire around the Ignition switch to the head light, but I'd settle for starting it so I could ride it to the shop and order a key set and the locks and switches I needed. So you know, I tried this back in the late 70s, and it worked with Hondas which had the fuses under the right side cover. pretty darn well.

It may not work on what you got. Those are the breaks!

If it works you will need to take the wire off or it will drain your battery.
Reply:Depends on what kind of dirtbike... there will probably be 4 wires going to the back of the switch... red, brown, black, %26amp; black/white.. clip the black %26amp; black/white ones %26amp; tape the ends to they aren't touching each other.... then connect the red %26amp; brown wires.. if it works, then hook a toggle switch between them..

First motorcycle?

I am looking to buy my first motorcycle. I have been riding my dirtbike for about two years, it is a 1979 yamaha 250. I am thinking about getting a 1985 - 1987 honda shadow. I am pretty sure this isnt to large or powerful to be a first road bike. I am just looking for some information on it. Weight, horsepower, top speed, etc... And what a good price would be.
First motorcycle?
Motorcyles are cool but be careful buddy.
First motorcycle?
The way you do it: Identify the PERFECT model, and its exact specification and type that into a search engine, with "Honda CB400A, 1978 statistics weight HP review gas mileage". only with your details. If there are any reviews out there, they will show up, and YOU can begin the long search. Mine makes 27 HP power whether i need them or not. And weighs about 400 pounds, oh and you can look up used motorcycle in Kelly's Bluebook, they even have a section on rare and collectible bikes like mine (max $2150).

Hows that for being to lazy to rob you of the fun of doing it yourself?
Reply:Ill give ya a hing on rice burners. If its over 10 years old, dont buy it. PERIOD.

You dont have the knowlege nor pocketbook to support it.
Reply:The Kymco Venox is such an excellent starter bike, beautiful, solid build, quality construction. Its a 250cc with the look of a 650 at least, motorcycle cruiser with lots of chrome, a real show stopper ! It outperforms all other 250cc bikes in its class.

I have been riding it for about 4-5 months and it am really very satisfied riding it. Top speed is about 75 mph but with a cruiser like this, you won't want to go faster, quite a comfortable ride with a deep growl engine sound. New ones can be had for $4,000 approx. and used ones (just a few years old with low mileage) go for $1800 and up.

Do a search for Kymco Venox in a search engine like Yahoo or Google and you can get more information on these. They are truly gorgeous bikes, trouble-free and very sturdy construction and well balanced.

Good luck, have fun and make sure to take the MSF Riding class (the course tales two and a half days) which is excellent to teach you riding skills and safe riding.
Reply:A 750 Honda Shadow is a good choice. About 40 horsepower, 95 mph top speed, cruise about 65. Will go 75 but needs rpm to do it. I'd buy a newer bike and one with shaft drive Not older than 10 years. I think 3500 will buy a nice one.
Reply:THe shadow is a good bike it is not to big but I have to agree with the other guy I own a Venox also and have rode all over for three years now on it trouble free. Including one trip over 900 miles. It might be worth a look at.

Should weight affect the power of your motorcycle?

I'm looking at getting a motorcycle sometime in the near future. I have already signed up for a class. I'm not exactly the smallest guy in the world. I'm 6'4 and roughly around 270 pounds, almost 300 around purchase time (muscle not fat). I was told I was to big for a Ninja 250R and I should look more into the 500 / 600 range. I wanted something cheap to fudge around on and gain more skill, but If I'm going to spend 9 grand on a bike, mine as well be one I'm going to have for a long time. Or am I just being a cocky moron. Ive ridden bikes before, but never owned, so I'm not really sure what to do.
Should weight affect the power of your motorcycle?
A Ninja 250 is way to small for you ---- Trust me on this on -- You will look silly riding a bike that small... You can get a 600CC for less than 9 grand.... I dont know where you got that idea but bikes brand new in 600CC can be had for less money.....
Should weight affect the power of your motorcycle?
Dude, as big as you are, nuttin under 800cc.

Maybe a United Motors/Hyosung CV650s.

For 9k your in the range of the Honda Shadows.
Reply:Dont even consider 250cc's. You would literally weigh more than them.

I'm 6foot and feel stupid on a 250.

Dont bother looking at sports bikes, you need to be looking at something like a cruiser.

Depending on your laws in your area, I would suggest a cruiser from Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda or Kawasaki around the 750cc size.

Go for a drive to the dealers and sit on a few bikes and see which one is comfortable for you.
Reply:Consider a Sportster, after your riding course and after you spend a couple days on a buddys well used bike.
Reply:weight does not effect the "power" of the motorcycle but it does effect the power to weight ratio! If you want to tool around on a motorcycle and learn/build new skills you can look for pre-owned or unsold pre-year bikes on a budget. as far as displacement the "danger" for a novice is the much greater potential horsepower/torque increase with every increase of throttle. larger displacement bikes will just bite you sooner if your a ham fist with them!
Reply:ok bottom line may be they all right!! BUT,

ask yourself what do u need the bike for?

if it just for going to work or just as a ( perfect cheap ) trasportation. so GO FOR IT

i've been riding ninja 250R for 2 years now and i changed two models ( almost the same) 2005 %26amp; 2006

its just perfect for me

the NINJA 250R ( even a good maintained preowned one) could get u -/+ 90 miles/hour in the highway

and regarding your weight i'm sure that it doesn't mattern what is the top speed but it could matter just a little bit in the speeding

i'm 220 lbs 5.8 and its perfect for me, plus my GF usually join alot of rides with me so its almost like 350 and believe me it still perfect ( we went in a trip for 150 miles on the highway) and we was like 85 - 95 miles/hour and it happend many times

add to this perfect on gas up to 40 - 50 miles or more per galon

and fun price 2000 - 2600 $ for a good used one 2005 - 2006

good luck and have fun

What kind of bike do you need to pass the motorcycle skills test in CA?

I am getting a Yamaha Vino 125cc scooter, and I need to get my M2 class license. The guy at the dealership said that I would need to take the motorcycle skills test at the DMV on a 250cc or higher bike. Then again, he also suggested that the cops are not going to bother me if I don't have a license for the scooter. Is he right?
What kind of bike do you need to pass the motorcycle skills test in CA?
I dont think they will give you a test for a motorcycle license useing a scooter :P because you would'nt have any skills pretaining to operateing a motorcycle.

Get atleast a 750cc so you wont get a ticket for holding up traffic.
What kind of bike do you need to pass the motorcycle skills test in CA?
Probably they will, if you are stopped for any other reason. Take the class its a lot of fun and you learn safety measure to use in traffic. Also you get a little break on your insurance.
Reply:I do not know, but I bet if you try, they will snatch you up, call a tow truck to carry your Vino away forever, loch the door and throw the book at you.

See if there is a BASIC RIDER COURSE near you and ask to be put on the waiting list, for a drop out. (the classes fill up in advance for the riding season, which usually means SUMMER. If you pass, it fulfils the state's requirements for a license, at least it does in other states.

So call around, you use THEIR bike and YES they usually have 250s, with standard transmissions. The class is rather high, but it is frequently subsidised by the state. (gotta pay for the gas and use of the bike, right?) Sounds ideal, for you, it may cover things you will not do again, but it is a skill ands takes practise like anything else.

And you might wind up qualified to ride anything on two or three wheels.

Is there anyway to find my VIN number to a 73 honda cb350 motorcycle?

ok on the title it has 12 numbers and thats with out the dashes. some websites dont go back later than 81 but its my uncles old bike he died when i was 16 now im 19 also since he is gone would his wife have to sign the title over to me or what
Is there anyway to find my VIN number to a 73 honda cb350 motorcycle?
It's usually stamped into the metal at or near the yoke or steering head.
Is there anyway to find my VIN number to a 73 honda cb350 motorcycle?
Its either stamped on the bikes frame near the petrol tank or on a metal plate attached to the front of the bike..
Reply:You will find the VIN stamped into the neck of the frame.

Having the title makes things easier.

She may or may not need to have the title changed before signing it over to you. Laws vary from state to state, and I don't know where you are.

When Dad died, everything that was jointly owned became hers. Everything that was his became hers. Again, this is something that can change from state to state.

Your best way to tackle it would be to work together with her, and both go to your DMV. They will have the answers for you.

Good luck.

Not that bad of a deal. However, I have a few suggestions.

First, actually inspect the bike with your own eyes. It is not a good idea to buy a used motorcycle over the Internet sight unseen.

Bring a friend. If you do not have your motorcycle license yet, bring a friend with a motorcycle license. Bring two helmets.

First, check some of the obvious items. It will give you an idea of how the bike was maintained.

Look at the chain. Is it rusty? Is it adjusted to near its limit?

If it has adjustable brakes, are they adjusted to their limit? If it has disk brakes, are the disks rusty, pitted or grooved?

If the bike has a center stand, put it on the center stand. Have your friend hold the bike steady. Pull on the rear wheel from side to side. Is there any play in the swing arm?

Look at the tires. Is there good tread? Is there any weather checking?

Look at the oil. Does it look black and neglected or does it look like it had a recent change?

Look at the overall appearance. Is there lots of rust? Are pieces missing or broken? Are there any bad scratches or dents that you are unwilling to accept? Is the seat ripped?

Start the engine. Did the owner warm it up before you got there or was the engine cold? Was it easy to start? Did it turn over well or did the battery sound weak? Did it smoke when it started? Any unusual sounds? Is there excessive valve clatter?

Take it for a ride. How does the engine run? Does it smoke? Does the transmission shift smoothly? Does the clutch slip? Are the brakes firm? Do the brakes squeal? Are there any unusual rattles? Does the suspension work well or easily bottom out?

Any defects you find are something that you may need to deal with in the future. Some items can be inexpensive to repair. However, some motorcycle parts can be surprisingly expensive. If it is an older bike, spare parts may not be readily available. Once you buy it, any repairs required to keep it on the road will be your responsibility.

It helps to know at what price bikes of similar size and age sell for in your local area. This will help you judge if the bike is priced correctly. Watch the classifieds.

If you decide to buy it, get yourself a maintenance manual. I got a Clymer manual for my bike on eBay for about $25. It will pay for itself the first time you use it.
Reply:Price : Mileage : Years = Good deal.

However, I would find a local motorcycle repair shop. Offer to pay the mechanic there $50 to come check out the bike before you buy. He can tell you if it's really a good deal. The seller should let the mechanic test drive it.
Reply:It's not that bad of a deal, especially if it is in great shape mechanically as well as body wise. Bring someone familiar with bike along with you to look for problems/concerns and help you with the fit.

What is the difference between a mini quad and a quad?

I am looking to purchase a quad for a first time rider. It's for a child and I am wondering if the mini quad is just smaller hense the mini title? Or is it like those mini dirt bikes that look like tiny ninja bikes? The engine sizes are the same I think (on the quads) so Im just wondering exactly why the mini in front of it?
What is the difference between a mini quad and a quad?
i assume a mini quad is like a mini moto.a bit to small even for a child realy.if your child is only young go for an auto with restrictable throttle.some quads for children even have a cord that raps round your wrist so if your child takes off it pulls out and cuts off the engine.
What is the difference between a mini quad and a quad?
a mini quad is the 4 wheel ver of a pocket bike from 50cc to 110cc ish top speeds are about 35 screeming, Yes its the 4wheeler ver of the "tiny ninja bikes"

I have a 250 superdream 1980 the battery wont hold a charge?
it will have some charge in

why not call a day ahead and ask them if they'll charge it for you
I have a 250 superdream 1980 the battery wont hold a charge?
bike batterys wont have much charge in them.i even had to put the acid in the cells myself last time i bought one.dont worry its not hard and every things supplied plus instructions
Reply:Bike batteries only last 2-3 years if yours is older ,time for a new one.

Call ahead to the shop and ask them to put your new battery on the charger so it's juiced up when you get it.
Reply:probobly need a new battery ,also check its charging ok on the bike as the regulator rect aint the best on these bikes when they get old
Reply:your new battery will need charged before fitting but that may not be the fault...its etither the stator coils or more likely the voltage gregulator/rectifier..

DMV laws for 150 cc Moped in VA?

I was thinking about getting a moped with 60+ MPH. Do I need to get a motorcycle liscense and how much is usually insurance a month for one of these things?
DMV laws for 150 cc Moped in VA?
In Va a moped is defined as having a motor less than 50cc and having a maximum speed of 30mph. Anything bigger/faster than that is considered to be a motorcycle. Therefore, you would need a motorcycle endorsement in order to operate it. I'm not sure of the insurance. You would probably get different answers from different insurance companies. I would suggest taking MSF basic riders course. This will help you get you endorsment and may get you a discount on you insurance.

The best thing you can do is look up DMV in Va. and see what the requirements are, straight from the government.

Where is the manufactured date located on a yamaha rt 180?

How did you learn to ride?

When I purchased my first bike in 1972 (a 1968 BSA Shooting Star) I had

absolutely no riding experience except for about an hour riding in a parking lot on a buddies Honda 70.

I was working 85 miles from the dealer. The purchase was made over the phone and payment was by mail.

The dealer left the bike outside his shop, deposited the keys and ownership at a restaurant next door and I picked up the bike on a Sunday.

Took me an hour to kick start it because I did not know what a fuel petcock was. The owner of the restaurant finally took pity on me and came out to assist me.

Drove the bike 85 miles back to my workplace that day.

Took three months of riding before I went for my license. And I only did that because I got nicked for speeding and the cops gave me a week to produce a valid license.

At the time I would have been labelled a "squid" or worse. A lot has changed in 30 years but I still own a BSA 441 (not the original - it's long gone) and I ride it 5-6 hours weekly.
How did you learn to ride?
Wow...thats...awesome in my opinion...learn by experience...unfortunately I have no experience yet and its kind of sad the way people answer questions in here..if youre not middle aged buying a flipping Harley the answer is youre going to kill yourself...I'm 18 hoping to get a YZF-R6 to ride and I saw a question similar to mine where the kid just got attacked...all they said was no you're too young and its too much power..kill a dream why dont you.... nice story though...cool to just pick up something out of nowhere...must have been a hard but fun 85 miles haha.
How did you learn to ride?
I started on a 5 horse tecumseh mini bike when i was 6...

when i turned 8, i traded it for a Kawasaki 550 LTD, rode that bike all summer around the yard for 7 years

when i turned 15, I traded it for some truck parts, then when i turned 17, i got a 1977 Honda CB750FourK...

i got my permit, and i've been riding ever since (that was 6 years ago)

now i have a Honda CBR1100XX, and i ride it regularly...
Reply:learnt to ride down the river with mates on an old honda 70 stepper.great fun we would ride for hours on a 拢1 of petrol .you couldnt cut your lawn for that nowadays
Reply:Bought a Honda XR 75 off of a mate when I was 11 and he showed me the basics. On the road my dad taught me the basics.
Reply:@ drumgod - I wouldn't take those comments as an attack, it's more likely that those people shudder to think of the ways they almost killed themselves. The death rates for sportbike riders is high and it's possible someone knows someone who got hurt badly or even died.

I learned on a YZ125 dirtbike from the age of 15. We lived just outside the city and I drove that thing everywhere.
Reply:I learned at the school of hard knocks. My first bike was a 1970 cb750 honda I bought in 1975. I didn't know I was supposed to learn anything, just how to shift the gears. Fortunately I never had an accident but back to your question, I just jumped on and started riding.
Reply:near enough the same as you bought bought a mate's nsu 19 69-70insured it bought provisional licence %26amp; then went straight out on the road %26amp; road that for about a year never droped that one took my test about 1975 failed going through an unmarked cross roads, ( my street) "lol" perfect pass second time a few month later in the snow bloody freezing %26amp; all electrics were packing up 6volt system had to use hand signals,
Reply:I learned on a dragstrip and after awhile got a street bike a305 honda it was fun so I moved up to a KZ1000 LTD over the years. I have had Honda's , Yamaha's and Kawasaki also Kymco and Harley. I have ridden everything from superstock Honda to Blown Top Fuel Harley and we did not put wheelie bars on them then you had to ride it. Still have the KZ and a Kymco Venox. I never took a saftey course but I would have you new guys should what I see out there now is not good for the sport. It will only bring trouble down on all off us.
Reply:I was 13 when i convinced my folks i had to have a dirt bike. They bought me a new 1968 Suzuki 100 which wasn't made for dirt but i got by til i learned to ride it,then i traded up to a Bultaco motocrosser. At 18 i got an old BSA M22 which i rode til i was 21.Then i bought a 1956 Panhead which i still own.Had a few other bikes through the years too.I'm like you though ,nobody taught me,i just got on a started riding. My main ride now is a 2002 Electraglide Classic.I almost bought an old BSA Victor recently.I still love those old thumpers.
Reply:Great stories here! I first learned by begging rides on my friend's '83 Yamaha Virago 750. It was a Harley clone with a v-twin engine. I just remember how HUGE it seemed... and the giddy laughter that bubbles up from piloting something way more powerful than a normal car.

Riding in a big city I had no helmet, no leathers, no license, and shudder to think about it now... my buddy soon picked up all three though and was a very safe rider. That Virago was a pretty reliable bike too, except for the stupid starter that kept breaking.

I remember him letting another friend of ours have a ride. That guy was used to much smaller engines. First time on -- wouldn't you know it -- whacked open the throttle, the bike roared and wheelied up like a wild horse and dumped him off on his knees. The bike drifted into some brush and had almost no damage, while our friend slid JUST enough on the concrete to tear through his jeans, but no real blood was drawn. Lucky as hell...

Somehow I didn't ride for seven years after those great summers. But the bug bit again hard after college. I picked up a Honda Shadow and took the MSF class. Four bikes later I'm still riding and even doing long trips, but I can't seem to talk my old friend back into it. He actually still has the mighty Virago, but after years of sitting it's become a conversation piece in back of his garage. One day, I'll hook him again, I know it. I can tell from the way he looks at new bikes that the next tiny push could be the one...
Reply:Moved to florida after graduating high school and needed a way to get around other than friends. They did not require insurance if your finance company did not. So went and looked at a few and got one from a used dealer with payments of about 50 a week. Drove till i got caught with no liesen and let go. Required at that age in florida to take a msf course before you can get liesen and then not to even have to take a driving test so finally got my liesen. Bought a few, few hundred buck bikes and a few used from dealers too. None over 1500 bucks. One day would like a new one but will keep getting used or even good used bike though. Started riding 1989-90.

Reply:My riding start sounds like a comic strip, but ended well. Just before I finished high school (1952), I bought a 1942 Harley 45. The owner rode it out, but told me it needed rod bearings, as it was knocking. Price was right, so I took it. I was a farm boy, had already rebuilt hay baler and tractor engines, without assistance, and the ols owner loaned me a book, "Nicholsons Motorcycle Repair" or close name. I read it, and tore into the engine. Jury rigged a bit of a lapping setup, my Dad got me a new set of bearings, and gaskets. After a few evenings work, it was back together, and IT RAN!

My little shop was about 50 yards from the front gate, so thought I would ride there and back, almost ran over a side delivery rake and a mower on that trip, Next day, rode to the road, and about 1/4 mile up the road, and turned around in a church yard. There and back - OK. Next day, something broke on one of our machines, a small part, but had top go to town to be welded. So, I got on the bike, and away we go! About 1/2 mile toward town, was a creek, a small bridge, with a bend in the road, right in the middle of the bridge. So, I got there, slowly, and since it was a RH bend, pulled the RH bar, to take the bend. Almost hit the LH side of the bridge. Reaction was to get away, so I leaned right, and the bike followed, and I missed the bridge. Other than killing it a a few stoplights, the rest of the trip was uneventfull. The next ride was on Sunday, a couple of days later, I rode 40-50 miles or so, without incident. Rode the bike the rest of the sumer, sold it before leaving for college, then in the spring, bought an Indian Chief. That was the longest time I did not have a bike, since 1952. In Tennessee, in those days, to get a license, all you needed to do was type "Motorcycle Also" on your drivers license. When you renewed your license, the new license would have "Motorcycle Also" printed on it.

Now, about 1/2 million miles later, still riding. Have done some competition stuff, dirt, a bit of road racing, a lot of drag racing, and land speed trials. Would not trade the experience for all the money in the world!

Buying street bike for the first time. What kind of Q's and concerns should I have if it is used?
Buying a used street motorcycle is a lot like buying a used car. thanks to sites on the web, you can go loaded with knowledge.

I highly recommend knowing the pricing of similar mileage and condition bikes on eBay before you go. Typically, you won't find sellers willing to drop to an eBay price, but it does set an approximate appraisal value on a vehicle.

By example, if you Road Rocket 600 has 4 currently offered on eBay, all with under 6000 miles,a nd they are selling for $5,800-$6,200, then you have a good idea of the street value of the machine. Expect to pay either the top eBay end or a few hundred more.

If you are NOT mechanically savvy, just like a car, agree to pay for a shop inspection prior to the sale. Set a final sale price, and terms on inspection findings. Most if not all sellers should agree to this. Don't be too surprised if you hear stuff from the shop you didn't expect, use it more as a "at least I know about this" than a deal breaker.

Test ride it, anything that makes you think of poor handling or abnormal feelings to what you expected, is probably a costly repair, moving the bike to the overlook and move on category.

Look for parts. Check OEM parts availability. Bikebandit.com carry the parts? All bikes break. If it's down long periods awaiting parts, you won't be happy.

Most of all, don't sell your ideals of what you wanted out when looking. A long hard search with a great result is much more satisfying than the quick, close enough that never fits your desire.

How can I make my Yamaha Vino faster?

I have a 2003 Yamaha Vino 50cc. It currently goes about 30mph and I have been trying to figure out how to increase its speed
How can I make my Yamaha Vino faster?
Take out the restricter, update the engine.
How can I make my Yamaha Vino faster?
you can do many upgrades to your engine..CVT and exhaust to get more power...check out the forum here to see what other Vino riders have done

Reply:Lose some weight. Its only 50cc's, so any big increase in power is going to cost big $$$$.

You've got 2 options to reduce the rolling resistance of that bike (since adding extra HP isn't cost-effective)......increase tire pressure, or lose weight. Think about it.....bicycles are rated to run at 40-60 psi, and there isn't much difference between a scooter and a 10spd.

First time street bike rider?

I'm 18, 5"11, 136lbs. Have never ridden a motorcycle but have clutch experience in a car. I would like to get a new/used YZF-R6 (I know i know too much power, going to kill myself, dont waste your time typing that) What I'm looking for is a way to get a test ride maybe with someone or maybe some POSITIVE advice that doesn't involve wasting money buying a 50cc bike from 1960 to outride it in a couple of months.

I know Yamaha and other bike companies hold test rides at places but there wont be one for a while in my area so what can I do?

Also any pointers and hints on buying cheap helmets and jackets would be nice.

And one more thing has anyone bought that spine guard (looks like a lifting belt that goes up over the spine with pads and straps over ribcage)?
First time street bike rider?
okay, time for some good advice...

Point 1. most important: Gear saves lives, Not loud pipes...

Get yourself a Good jacket from a reputable company, and a snell approved full face helmet...bare minimum! gloves, boots, and armored pants are a definite plus...a spine guard probably will not be of much benefit for every day riding..

point 2. If you've already decided what bike you want, and you can afford it, go get it...but be prepared, the odds of you at least dropping it a couple of times are very high...keep that in mind...

point 3. Take the MSF course, they will teach you all the basics, and get you ready to ride...from there it's just about practice, and honing your skills.

Take the MSF course before you buy...get your license, then preactice practice practice, and always wear your gear...
First time street bike rider?
Take a motorcycle training course if you have never ridden a motorcycle before. Starting on a R6 is not a good idea because sport bikes handle differently then cruiser bikes and you can easily flip and hurt yourself. But if you really have your heart set on it, taking a motorcycle course will prevent you from killing yourself.

Also don't do anything stupid.
Reply:600cc eh,great fun.wish i was your age again.you wont kill yourself unless youre a total nutter.most bikes nowadays can outperform rider.just ride normaly youl soon find your own limits.good luck with the bike
Reply:Too much power, you're going to kill yourself !

Or mangle the bike you test ride.

Why not do the wise thing , Take the MSF riders course, then get yourself a smaller starter bike , ride it for a season and next year if your up to it ,get your YZF-R6 ?

Reply:Gear does save lives, but loud pipes do also because it gets the attention of some cagers that don't see you because they are not paying attention.
Reply:Most of what those guys said is good sound advice except for loud pipes ,it has been proven they DO NOT SAVE LIVES they just aggravte the people that hear them and turn the public against and sonny they can out wait us.
Reply:Best advice I can give a new teenage rider:

Ego will kill you. Leave it home.
Reply:First off let me start by saying I'm 19, so I'm right there with you. I wanted a bike last year and advise from some riders that I know was to get a small bike. I got a 2004 250 ninja for $2300. Best thing I could have done. It accelerates faster than your regular sedan and it has no problem getting to 100mph. Something that I read the other day, "jet fighters don't start out flying jets, why should motorcyclists?"

1. Take the safety course. You might find out riding isn't for you, plus if you drop the bike there you won't feel as stupid as dropping a new YZF-R6. With the course you automatically get your license. I wouldn't think that they'd let you test ride one without a license, but I could be wrong.

2. I agree with the first guy about the gear. Your head is important and you should protect it with snell approved, in my opinion.

Why I started with a 250. Resale is great on that bike. If you decide to move up in size you can easily get back what you paid. Very forgiving throttle. If you accidently give it more throttle that you wanted you won't go popping any wheelies and falling off the bike. This is the story that sold me on this bike, 700 miles on a kawasaki ninja 250 http://www.pashnit.com/forum/showthread....
Reply:Get the r6 the only way to know the power of the bike is to ride it and its pretty much like riding a regular bike till u get to the powerband. Go ahead get the bike ride safe dont listen to the haters that cant afford the bike.
Reply:Unless you have a motorcycle endorsement on your license, NO manufacturer will allow you to ride their bike.

How do you get the seat off of a Kawasaki Mojave?

For future reference, always give year, make, engine size and model # when asking questions. We need all of that info to give an informed answer.

It's bolted on.

Look under the fender for two 10mm nuts.

Best Highway-rated Scooter?

I have a 40-mile round-trip highway commute each week-day. I'm considering the Honda Silver Wing.

Other suggestions and website links?
Best Highway-rated Scooter?
Any 250 cc or larger motorcycle or scooter would be fine for this 40 mile trip...I have a 150cc which I do a 105 kms round trip on and I would recommend the Honda Silver Wing or the Suzuki Bergman 400.... both are nice rides and will deliver many trouble free miles
Best Highway-rated Scooter?
Honda Silver Wing is a good choice. The only other scooter in its league is the Suzuki Bergman. Although, I do believe Piaggio and Kymco have 500cc machines, and Kymco may have a big (700+cc in the works ???). I guess that you will have to consider which dealers are local to you and what they offer deal wise. The Kymco scooters are made in Tiawan, and are highly regarded in terms of quality, and price.

Good luck on whatever you decide. Check out www.scootdawg.com for forum questions and answers.
Reply:Smaller motor (and lower top speed) but the Honda Reflex is also capable of keeping up on the freeway...

Yamaha T-Max (2009), Majesty

Suzuki Burgman 400/650

The 250cc is the smallest I would go, that way you have a little extra power on tap. At this point it would be a draw between the Silverwing and the Burgman 650. Both have a good amount of power, fast, and very comfortable (I tried the Honda). These are 'tourer' models that would be chosen for a long highway trip because of the amount of wind protection and comfort as well as driving range.

If you live in a hilly area or on a road that ou would be passing other vehicles, go for the bigger motor. From what I've heard both the Silverwing and the Burg are pretty nice bikes. I would lean more toward the Honda (there are Honda dealerships EVERYWHERE) so if something did happen... Besides, I'm a Honda guy from the beginning.

It will take awhile to pay for itself, and unless your really tough or in a warm climate it will be hard to ride in the winter. Have you considered purchase cost versus your current vehicle economy... Just something to think about.

Good luck
Reply:I have been on all of them and I would take a Kymco 250 or 500 hands down. Their 250 is smoother than a Bergman and will leave it flat. THe Xciting 500 has had Goldwings traded in on it. It is a highway ride.
Reply:Why not buy a real motorcycle? You can get a good used Honda or Yamaha 500 or 650 for a couple of thousand or less.

Budget a few hundred for a major tuneup (or not) and you will start to save money way sooner than by purchasing a new scooter.
Reply:NO!

the Honda Silver Wing is too heavy-too slow-too expensive

GET the "Suzuki Burgman 650"

the Burgman has the speed and acceleration as a fast crotch rocket, it keeps so much air off of you that you can smoke a cigarette and listen to the birds singing as your riding down the road at 70 mph, the storage space under the seat can handle 2- 50# bags of dog food, 7 bags of groceries, and 2 full size helmets, this scoot is the fastest, smoothest, and most quiet of all the scoots out there, plus it gets 60+ mpg
