Should weight affect the power of your motorcycle?

I'm looking at getting a motorcycle sometime in the near future. I have already signed up for a class. I'm not exactly the smallest guy in the world. I'm 6'4 and roughly around 270 pounds, almost 300 around purchase time (muscle not fat). I was told I was to big for a Ninja 250R and I should look more into the 500 / 600 range. I wanted something cheap to fudge around on and gain more skill, but If I'm going to spend 9 grand on a bike, mine as well be one I'm going to have for a long time. Or am I just being a cocky moron. Ive ridden bikes before, but never owned, so I'm not really sure what to do.

A Ninja 250 is way to small for you ---- Trust me on this on -- You will look silly riding a bike that small... You can get a 600CC for less than 9 grand.... I dont know where you got that idea but bikes brand new in 600CC can be had for less money.....

Dude, as big as you are, nuttin under 800cc.

Maybe a United Motors/Hyosung CV650s.

For 9k your in the range of the Honda Shadows.
Reply:Dont even consider 250cc's. You would literally weigh more than them.

I'm 6foot and feel stupid on a 250.

Dont bother looking at sports bikes, you need to be looking at something like a cruiser.

Depending on your laws in your area, I would suggest a cruiser from Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda or Kawasaki around the 750cc size.

Go for a drive to the dealers and sit on a few bikes and see which one is comfortable for you.
Reply:Consider a Sportster, after your riding course and after you spend a couple days on a buddys well used bike.
Reply:weight does not effect the "power" of the motorcycle but it does effect the power to weight ratio! If you want to tool around on a motorcycle and learn/build new skills you can look for pre-owned or unsold pre-year bikes on a budget. as far as displacement the "danger" for a novice is the much greater potential horsepower/torque increase with every increase of throttle. larger displacement bikes will just bite you sooner if your a ham fist with them!
Reply:ok bottom line may be they all right!! BUT,

ask yourself what do u need the bike for?

if it just for going to work or just as a ( perfect cheap ) trasportation. so GO FOR IT

i've been riding ninja 250R for 2 years now and i changed two models ( almost the same) 2005 %26amp; 2006

its just perfect for me

the NINJA 250R ( even a good maintained preowned one) could get u -/+ 90 miles/hour in the highway

and regarding your weight i'm sure that it doesn't mattern what is the top speed but it could matter just a little bit in the speeding

i'm 220 lbs 5.8 and its perfect for me, plus my GF usually join alot of rides with me so its almost like 350 and believe me it still perfect ( we went in a trip for 150 miles on the highway) and we was like 85 - 95 miles/hour and it happend many times

add to this perfect on gas up to 40 - 50 miles or more per galon

and fun price 2000 - 2600 $ for a good used one 2005 - 2006

good luck and have fun
